It is time once again to start training for this seasons Tough Mudders. If you don’t know what Tough Mudder is then you have to check out the link! Last year I did two Tough Mudders. I ran the first one on my own, and a lot of help from fellow Tough Mudders. The second one I ran with my brother. We had a blast. If being cold, wet, DIRTY, electrocuted, and nearly set on fire sounds like fun then Tough Mudder is for you! Get a team together or go at it alone. Get the wife or husband involved. It is a blast. The end of the 10 – 12 mile obstacle course is the best race after party I have been to. At Tough Mudder you don’t win some medal or t-shirt, you EARN a beer & headband and the right to call yourself a Tough Mudder. So how does one prepare for this day of painful bliss? Follow me, if you can stomach it.
Run. Run. Run. Then run some more. Nothing gets your endurance up like running; unless you are talking about Kettlebells!!! Try the 21 Day Kettle Bell Challenge. If you have never heard of a Kettlebell, let alone how to use one, RUN to the nearest sporting good store and pick one up. Most come with a DVD and instructional video. Kettlebells are old, Stalin in charge of Russia, old. And that happens to be where they are from. Today the US Marine Corps, US Secret Service, and other groups of bad ass men are using them for functional strength training and cardiovascular fitness. They are amazing. I may do an entire post on Kettlebells. If running and Kettlebells have you wanting more I suggest you pick up a tractor tire, literally, and flip it over. I have a nice 450 pound tire that I flip up and down my driveway. The neighbors look at me cross eyed, but it is their loss. If the tire beats you down then grab a 25 – 30 pound sledge hammer and beat it back. Pounding on a tractor tire with a 30 pound sledgehammer, while alternating grips, will develop core strength the Man of Iron would be proud of. Your last step is the most simple.
Find a nice long obstacle course race and SIGN UP!!! If you have some sissy goal like losing your spare tire you have an easy out. If you have a goal like finishing 12 miles of muscle scorching obstacles then you better not quit. These races also often support a great charity. The Tough Mudder has contributed nearly 3 million dollars to the Wounded Warrior Project. If I still have not motivated you by now to get off the couch and outside into the real world then open your wallet and SPONSOR ME. That’s right!!! For a small donation I will finish the Tough Mudder and you will be making a donation to The Wounded Warrior Project in YOUR name. I further challenge you all… if I get over 1500 dollars in donations I will run the Tri-State Tough Mudder twice in the same day. I will post pictures and videos to boot. I dare you all to make me try…. Follow this link: Sponsor Me for the Wounded Warrior Project!!!
