We here at Manertainment love zombies! We love zombie movies. We love zombie video games. We love zombie TV shows. In other words, we love The Walking Dead. It had it’s season finale last night and nine million viewers watched the AMC hit show Sunday, making it the highest rated episode in series history. For everyone who was bitching about the pace of the first half of the second season, I think you can now be happy. The last few weeks we have been given more zombie killing, human eating, blood, guts and gore than we could have imagined. Hell, we even got a couple of zombies on leashes! With they way the show paced itself over the last month, you have to be excited about next season!
Quick recap –
A helicopter (presumably the same one that Rick saw in the season premier) attracted a zombie herd in Atlanta that caused the herd apparently to go for a looooonnnng walk and end up at the Hershel’s farm. The scene of them piling up at the wooden fence until the pressure of all the zombies pushing causing the fence to break was pretty awesome. So, this horde of Zombies almost manage to sneak up on Rick who is explaining to Carl why he had to kill Shane in the previous episode (not sure how a herd of zombies can sneak up on ANYONE) and said zombies go on to overrun the barn and feasted on a couple of characters we really didn’t care much about – Jimmy and Otis’ former girlfriend, Patricia.
Not to say that the deaths were not pretty riveting, Patricia’s was particualrly disheartening as she was pulled from the grasp of Beth. Jimmy either forgot to lock the doors of the RV or didn’t roll up the windows. He was a pretty easy meal for the undead after he went to help out Rick and Carl who were fleeing the burning barn they set ablaze to cook some zombies.
Now let me back up for just a minute and tell you how confused I was about the “plan” the survivors came up with. They see the herd of zombies approaching the barn. Their brilliant idea isn’t to flee. No, they decide to go zombie hunting for a moment before they figure out that they don’t have enough bullets to kill 200+ zombies and THEN decide to flee, after wasting lord knows how much ammo. Now I suppose the reason they stayed was in hopes that Rick, Shane (they didn’t know his ass was already dead, reanimated and then dead again) and Carl would return and Hershel had some strange desire to defend his farm but come on – there is a herd of the undead approaching… run… RUN!!!
For the first 30 minutes of this episode, all hell was breaking loose. Daryl was doing what Daryl does – he was a bad ass. He just rode around on his chopper killing zombies with very little effort. Hershel became wrathful as he mowed down the undead with a shotgun out front of his house. T-Dog was driving a truck around as Andrea was putting bullets in the zombies’ brain-pans. And Maggie was cruising around as the ever-useful Glenn was putting some flesh eaters out of their misery.
Hershel almost bit it before Rick saved his ass – very nice directing on that one! The blood splatter on Hershel’s bald spot was fantastic! Andrea eventually has to go save Carol but then Carol just ditchers her… bitch. T-Dog gets Lori and Beth in the truck and then proceeds to get the fuck out of dodge. Glenn convinces Maggie it’s time to go as she basically runs into a zombie road block. Daryl is smart and already is leaving when he hears Carol screaming and goes back to save her. Rick, Hershel and Carl leave as well and we are left with the barn burning to the ground.
We get to see Andrea running from her life and doing some serious zombie ass-kicking. She even kills this one with a tree –
And then she runs and shoots and runs and shoots and then eventually runs of of bullets. It looks like she is next on the menu until a freaking katana takes the head off of the zombie who was prepping her for a meal! ***SPOILERS*** It’s Michonne!!! Resident bad ass of the comic books!!! And she has her boyfriend and his best friend in tow – the zombies on leashes.
Then the pace slows down a bit and we get some heartfelt speeches from Hershel and Rick as they try to figure out what to do. Eventually the whole gang ends up together after some heart-to-heart conversations and then they decide to drive east. Eventually Rick’s truck begins to run out of gas so they have to pull over and have a great debate about where to go. Rick finally tells Lori that he killed shane –
“I knew what he was doin’. And I kept going’. I didn’t stop. I could have, but…I just wanted it over. I wanted him dead. I killed him.” On The Talking Dead, Kirkman said that her reaction was supposed to be her upset that she caused it to happen. If that’s the case then I guess it’s just bad acting/direction… or she’s just an idiot. I tend to go towards the latter.
Then the group gathers in a rock formation, they hear a noise and get into another debate about what to do about and Rick finally snaps! He tells everyone he killed Shane and then dared them to leave. When they didn’t he decided to invoke a dictatorship!!! One nation, under Rick… I think the hero Rick that Shane didn’t believe could lead is dead, thanks to Shane himself.
He better be with that prison on the horizon!
